Short bio

I was born and raised in the Midwest of the USA, near Chicago.  I earned a B.A. in Bible and Theology from the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago (where I met my wife, Sara), a Masters of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield IL, and a PhD in Theology from the University of St Andrews, St Andrews, Scotland (where both our daughters were born).

I have been in ministry for over 20 years, serving in many different church ministries and teaching at several different universities and colleges in the US, Europe, and Asia.  Before taking the pastorate in an international, interdenominational church in Beijing, China I served as an Associate Professor of Theology at a Christian university in Phoenix.  I have numerous publications, including a co-authored book with Stephen R. Holmes and an upcoming book with InterVarsity Press.  I am an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Covenant Order of Presbyterians.

“I’ve always been excited about connecting the worlds of theology and pastoral ministry, because I think they need each other.  Serving the church as a pastor-scholar is one of the many things I love about my ministry.”
